African China (real name: Chinagorom Onuoha) is a legendary Nigerian singer, songwriter, and musician best known for his socially conscious Pidgin reggae and dancehall music. Born and raised in the Orile ghetto of Lagos, he gained massive prominence in the early 2000s for addressing political corruption, police brutality, and the struggles of the common man.
Born into a family from Imo State, Chinagorom Onuoha is the last child of his mother. He grew up in the rustic Orile and Ajegunle areas of Lagos, environments that heavily influenced his lyrical content and shaped his reputation as "the voice of the Nigerian masses". The stage name "African China" is actually an acronym that stands for: African Children Have Ideas Natural for African.
African China began his music journey at the age of seven, officially going fully into music in 1996 after completing his secondary education. He burst onto the professional scene in 1999, securing his first major award at the Nigerian International Song Festival before officially releasing his critically acclaimed debut album, Crisis, in 2000.He followed up this success with the sophomore album Mr. President in 2005, which became one of the best-selling records in Nigeria. The title track, "Mr. President," and other hits became massive national anthems that criticized political leaders and called for positive reform.
